I've lived in Sydney all my life and have been an ocean kid since I was in sandy nappies. But it wasn't until I started going out on the whale boats that I discovered just how wild Sydney Harbour and its surrounds can be. This whale is partying right next to Manly - it's on the harbour's north side, and it has been home to a secret wild colony of Little Penguins since at least the 1940s. Pretty freaking cool! I recorded a podcast with my mate Ranger Mel Tyas who looks after these special penguins - click the link in my bio to hear it, and let me know what you think. Happy Friday mates!
Friendly little Galapagos Sea Lion cheekily tempting me to go in for a hug. The islands' little pinnipeds are really friendly but it's super important that you don't touch them - scent is a vital part of how they bond. If their mum gets one whiff of human stink on them then they abandon the pup.
The edge of the earth. I snapped this polar bear hanging around Hudson Bay's Cape Churchill, where she was waiting for the sea ice to freeze before she could return to the floes to hunt and eat. The bears do this every summer but it's thought that as the poles heat up, the time between meals grows. Itching to get back to that phenomenal part of the world...
Happy humpday friends, from the good old days (aka before the humpbacks rushed off to Antarctica for the summer). Bonus: actual proof that Sydney once had breathable skies. Snapped this headbanger off Maroubra. 💙
